Tip 1 - Do Your Research

This is an important investment. Take some time to research where to buy your wedding dress. Do they stock brands that you like? Is it a private appointment? Is the boutique close to where you live to factor in seamstress appointments?

Most boutiques have great websites with lots of information so get clued up before making a booking. Consider booking 2-3 appointments......going to too many boutiques can be very confusing and it can become a chore as opposed to an enjoyable experience!

Tip 2 - Timescales

Consider your timescale. Designer gowns can take 7-9 months to arrive at the boutiques and then you will need 2-3 months for alterations ahead of your wedding day.

Leave plenty of time to make it as stress free as possible.

Tip 3 - Budget

If you have a limited amount to spend then don’t try on dresses that you can’t afford as it will only make you unhappy if you fall in love with a gown that is out of your reach.

Research the boutiques and their price structure prior to booking the appointment.

Tip 4 - Alterations

Does the boutique have an in house seamstress?

Allow enough budget and time for alterations. The most gorgeous wedding dress will look a mess unless it fits you perfectly! Don’t skimp on alterations and factor these into your budget!

Tip 5 - Underwear

Underwear is key both when trying on gowns and on your wedding day.

Think nude and seamless. Most wedding gowns have a built in cup but take along a nude seamless bra if you prefer more support

Tip 6 - Your Theme

Think about how your gown will fit into your wedding day....venue/time of year/ theme etc.

Tip 7 - Don't Pressure Yourself

Try not to put pressure on yourself to lose weight......the lead up to your wedding day can be stressful so don’t make it more so!

Tip 8 - Hair & Makeup Trial

Take some time to do your hair and makeup prior to the appointment as this allows you to visualise how you will look on your day more easily.

Tip 9 - Shoes

Shoes are important. Think about heel height as this will affect the length of your dress.

It’s great if you can bring a shoe with the heel height that you are planning to wear on your day to the appointment. Buy a shoe that you can wear again instead of them sitting in a box after your big day.

Also invest some time wearing them for 30 minutes or so a week in the lead up to your day to avoid having sore feet...you will not regret it!

Tip 10 - Your Company

Carefully chose who you bring along to the appointments with you. Too many opinions can ruin the experience. Remember that you are the person picking the gown!

Tip 11 - Be Open Minded

Be open minded and try on different shapes and styles even if you think you know what you want. Very often brides never go for what they think prior to the appointment. Also trust in the advice of the bridal boutique owner....they are the experts and may select something you wouldn’t consider. Wedding dresses can look very different on the hanger!

Tip 12 - Your Style

Talk to the boutique and let them know who you really are and what your style is....you should look like the most fabulous version of yourself on your wedding day and not the bride that you think you should look like!

Tip 13 - Accessories

Accessories can make a wedding dress...they are also a way to personalise a dress to you.

Belts, veils, jackets, capes; the list is endless!

Tip 14 - Veils

Consider a veil. Lots of ladies says they don’t want one but change their mind as soon as they try one with their wedding dress. A veil allows you to differentiate the seriousness of the ceremony from the more relaxed reception!

Tip 14 - Have fun!

Have fun and enjoy it. This is probably the most expensive outfit choice of your life so make it a memorable experience and a part of your wedding journey.
